John Magee, Pilot Poet

Author of Famous Poem “High Flight”

These first two lines of the poem ‘High Flight’ are famous, and the poem itself is perhaps the best known verse about aviation which exists. But although the poem is well known, many people know very little about its author, John Gillespie Magee.

Story of a Helicopter Record Breaker

Jennifer Murray and Colin Bodill in AntarcticaIn 1997 Jennifer Murray entered the Guinness Book of Records as the first woman to fly round the world in a helicopter. Three years later she became the first woman to pilot a helicopter solo round the world. The following year she entered the London to Sydney Air Race, coming third and setting a new helicopter world speed record. Then in 2007 she and co-pilot Colin Bodill completed the first circumnavigation of the world via both poles. So who is this extraordinary woman?

PROFILE: Helen Krasner

Helen Krasner holds a Commercial Pilot's Licence and Instructor's Rating for helicopters. She worked as a helicopter instructor for several years, instructing for various flying schools on Robinson R22s and R44s. She has also flown a large number of other helicopter types, has a private pilot’s licence for aeroplanes, and has tried flying microlights, gliders, and balloons.

Helen has been writing professionally for many years and contributes regularly to a number of aviation publications. She was nominated for an Aerospace Journalist of the Year award in 2004, for an article about flying helicopters in Russia. She is also a former Newsletter Editor for the BWPA (British Women Pilots' Association).
